The first thing you need to do after having a sprain is to take rest for a few days. Do not walk with your sprained foot as it may extend  your recovery period. Keep your legs in straight position with your ankle kept on a stool or chair. While lying down keep your affected leg on pillow and this helps you to reduce the swelling.

Ice pack

Place an ice pack on your sprained ankle for about 20 minutes. This may help you to reduce the swelling and pain in the affected area. While placing ice bag, care should be taken to avoid ke2eping it for more than 20 minutes as it may cause ice injury. After keeping the ice bag for 20 minutes wait for another 40 minutes and then keep the ice bag again for another 15 to 20 minutes.

Bandage

Tie a bandage over the affected ankle by keeping the ankle at 90 degree to the foot. You can use a soft cloth or large pad beneath the bandage and tie the bandage. While tying makes sure that it is not tight by inserting a finger through the bandage. Also ensure that your toes are not becoming bluish or having any numbness.

Alternate Hot and Cold Water Dip

Take hot water and cold water in two separate buckets and dip your sprained ankle in hot water for 30 seconds and then in cold water for another 30 seconds. Repeat this process for five minutes.

You can also apply aloe vera gel over the affected ankle before bandaging it.
