Swollen Tongue

Swollen tongue is a condition in which the tongue becomes inflamed and appears red. Chronic or acute inflammation of the tongue is also called angioedema of the tongue. Swelling on the tongue has to be taken seriously because some of these swellings advance rapidly and at times obstruct the respiratory tract.

Causes for swollen Tongue

Swollen tongue can be caused by several reasons like food allergy, allergy of medication, hereditary reasons etc. the swelling on the tongue can also be a symptom of certain diseases. Some times certain virus or bacteria may leads to swollen tongue. Exposure of tongue towards certain irritants like alcohol, tobacco, spices, hot foods may result in swelling on the tongue.

Allergy due to certain breath fresheners, mouth wash, tooth paste, plastic dentures, candy dyes etc may also cause swollen tongue. Any injury on the tongue due to burns, dental applications, edges of teeth etc also results in swelling on the affected area. Certain diseases like syphilis, oral lichen planus, pernicious anemia etc and the deficiency of certain elements like iron, B complex vitamins etc may also cause swelling on the tongue.

Symptoms of Swollen Tongue

The tongues become soft, smooth and swollen. It may also be accompanied  with pain. The color of the tongue may turn in to red and becomes pale when it is due to pernicious anemia. If the swelling is due to the deficiency of B complex vitamins then the tongue becomes fiery red. The affected person may have difficulty in swallowing, chewing and even for speaking. There may be tenderness and soreness on the tongue.

Treatment for Swollen Tongue

First you need to identify the reason for swelling on the tongue. If it’s due to allergy then find out the cause of allergy whether it is due to food allergy or medication allergy or some other allergies. Then try to avoid the allergen from your life.

In order to get relief from the discomfort apply cold compress on the tongue and mouth. Use salt water to rinse your mouth or use any antiseptic mouthwash. In order to avoid swollen tongue you need to keep good oral hygiene and brush your teeth twice a day. Take vitamin and mineral supplements to correct the deficiency.
