Glomerular Diseases
Glomerular disease is a disease that affects the kidney. In order to know more about glomerular disease you must know about the kidney and its structures. Kidney is a bean shaped structure that removes waste from your body and excretes it as urine. Thus kidney purifies the blood and in a day kidney purifies almost 400 quarts of blood.
Structure of a Kidney
Kidney has arteries through which blood enters to the kidney. Inside the kidney the arteries splits in to tiny blood vessels that loops to make clusters. Each of these clusters is called glomerulus. Glomerulus acts as the filters and there are about one million glomeruli. This glomerulus then opens to a fluid collecting tube which is called as tubule. The glomerulus together with the tubule is called nephron. With in a nephron the blood vessels and the tubule is separated by a glomerular membrane which permits the excess water along with waste to move to the tubule while allowing the proteins and blood cells to be in the blood itself.
Causes of Glomerular Disease
Glomerular disease occurs when this membrane gets damaged and allows the blood cells or proteins to get in to the urine or when the membrane prevents the waste products from leaking in to the urine.
Symptoms of Glomerular Disease
There may be good amount of protein in the urine and this condition is called proteinuria. Proteins like albumin enter the blood and there by reduces their amount in blood. Albumin remains as a sponge and suck excess water from the body in to the blood stream. Then this excess water is removed by the kidney. But when albumin is less in the blood then its capacity to draw excess water from body gets reduced and water accumulates in different parts of the body. This results in swelling in ankles, hands, face, feet etc. Protenuria in turn results in hypoproteinemia which means low level of protein in blood.
There may be at times blood in urine and this condition is called hematuria. Reduction in the rate of filtration of glomeruli is also a symptom of glomerular disease.
If you are found to have any such symptoms then make your doctor aware of your problem.
