The Benefit of Fibrous Foods
There has been enough said about the importance of adding fibre to our food intake. Few of us really know we are having more of these foods. While selecting foods rich in fibre, many people find themselves unable to identify the right type. Here is a better idea about what we should be eating and why.
Fibre is a good food component since it fills the stomach better, and keeps you full for much longer. It is very good for the stomach and keeps away many stomach problems and aids digestion. It also helps cure problems like constipation.
The added advantage of fibre is that it is mostly low in calories, and helps avoid unwanted weight gain. Fibre has also been found to reduce the risk of colon cancer, diabetes and the chances of suffering a heart attack.
It also helps lower cholestorol levels in the blood. The only word of caution would be to ensure that you have plenty of water through the day to ensure that the fibre functions optimally.
Breakfast is an important meal of the day. Try adding fibre by having more cereal, whole grain toasts, fruit, oats and bran, cornflakes, and also barley. Avoid having juices since fresh fruits have more fibre content than the juice. Also avoid peeling fruits whenever possible since the peels most often contain the highest amounts of fibre.
While selectig foods make sure you read the list of ingredients carefully. We are often fooled by the look of foods and perceive them to contain high amounts of fibre.
While having meals, try sticking to simply steaming vegetables, or even aving them raw if possible. Over cooking could lead to destruction of nutrients in food, and also reduces fibre content.
