The Best Natural Cures
Sugarcane has been an important food crop in the Indian sub-continent for very long. It has been used as a method of subsistence for a number of people. The consumption of sugarcane and its products has been extremely popular. Today, sugarcane not only makes an important crop, but also an avenue of revenue for many farmers.
What is not known very widely is the range of benefits that the sugarcane can offer. It is most known for its juice, which is a very soothing way to quench thirst. It can also be very filling and nutritious, provided, of course, it is hygienically prepared. It is known to subside the elements of air and fire, and helps remove impurities in the blood. It is a mild laxative. It, hence, does not agree with those suffering from dysentry and diarrhoea, or those who have weak intestines. It is also a common practice to remove the skin of the sugarcane, cut the rest in pieces, and chew on it.
Sugar is prepared from sugarcane. There are three varieties of sugarcane – red, white and black. Jaggery is made from sugarcane by boiling down the juice into a thick, viscous consistency called molasses or treacle. The uncrystallizale portion, invert sugar, of the saccharin juice which is drained off is sold as a distinct product. It is sweet, saltish, heavy, tonic, unctuous and a laxative. Jaggery is better used in place of white sugar, which is not at all good for the health. Pure jaggery subsides air and fire elements in the body, pleases the mind after strenuous activity, and also quenches thirst.
Patients suffering from jaundice can benefit greatly by the juice of sugarcane. They are kept only on its juice. They can also be given small pieces to chew on. A little ginger and lime added to it can make it more delicious. Vinegar prepared from sugarcane stimulates the appetite and improves digestion.
