The Blessing Called The Sweet Potato
There are some vegetables that are most commonly found in the winters. Among them is the sweet potato. They can be roasted on coal and eaten, or boiled with a little salt and consumed as a substitute for food on days of fasting. It can be baked, grilled or cooked to suit your taste. It can also be made into a vegetable, either with simple tempering or with a little curry. The reddish variety are known to have a strong taste. The sweet potato can also be fried in butter and given to children as a very healthy snack.
Although sweet in nature, the potato helps in regulating blood sugar levels well. They help watch over the secretion of insulin to a certain extent.
The rich content of beta carotene in the sweet potato, iron and phosphorous content make it a good food to boost immunity. High contents of vitamin C in the sweet potato also make it a potent cure for bronchitis.
There are many health benefits of Sweet Potato, Congestion in the nose and lungs can be cleared easily with the use of sweet potato, providing much relief to those suffering from asthma.
Residual water left from boiling the sweet potato need not be wasted. It’s application makes a good cure for joint pains and arthritis.
Sweet potatoes have very high fibrous content, making them a good laxative. They are easy to digest and can be given to chidren. Rich in carbohydrates, they help fill the stomach easily.
Many antioxidants and properties in the sweet potato help fight cancer as well. Cancers of the colon, kidneys, intestines and prostrates benefit especially.
Water is retained in the body better due to the high fibrous content. The roughage helps prevent acidic formation in the stomach, as also the occurrence of stomach ulcers.
