Alfalfa plants are revered by Native Americans and Chinese for their role in curing various aliments. Alfalfa has very long roots, which are capable of reaching about thirty feet below the soil surface. This plant is packed with vitamins and minerals, which keep us healthy and cure various diseases.

Nutritional value

The seeds and sprouts of alfalfa are generally consumed. They are rich in vitamins B,C, D, E and K. Minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous and silicon are present in the seeds and sprouts of alfalfa. Alfalfa is also a rich source of beta-carotene, a beneficial plant chemical.

Good for digestion

Often after suffering from an illness, we lose our appetite. Nausea and vomiting might slow down production of digestive juices and we stop feeling hungry. To recover your appetite, drink alfalfa tea. Alfalfa is one of the best natural appetite stimulators. Alfalfa helps to enhance secretion of the digestive juices, improve the health of your digestive system.

Blood cleanser

Alfalfa seeds and extracts from alfalfa plant are used for detoxification of the blood. They help to eliminate cholesterol from the blood stream. This property of alfalfa makes it suitable for preventing blockage of blood vessels. Alfalfa is therefore good for cardiovascular health.

Natural contraception

Women, who want to prevent pregnancy, can consume alfalfa seeds. Alfalfa seeds contain homostachydrine and stachydrine, compounds noted for triggering menstruation. During pregnancy, alfalfa should be avoided to lower risk of miscarriage.

Prevents hair loss

Alfalfa is capable of preventing hair loss. Alfalfa juice can be applied on the scalp to promote hair growth.

Kidney stone treatment

In traditional medicines, alfalfa sprouts are prescribed to dissolve kidney stones naturally. Alfalfa acts as a natural diuretic and is capable of preventing fluid retention. It can help in curing urinary discomforts.
