Tips for Safe Usage of Essential Oils

It is of utmost significance to keep a bottle of pure vegetable oil handy while applying essential oils. In case an essential oil causes irritation on skin, apply some quantity of pure vegetable oil on affected area to dilute essential oil.

It is recommended to avoid usage of water to wash essential oils as they are insoluble. The essential oils ought to be stored away from light in cool temperature to extend their life span.

Always discourage appliance of menthol based essential oils on throat area of children below age of 3 years.

It is advisable to avoid direct exposure to sunrays for three to four days post appliance of citrus based essential oils to avert rashes and discoloration of skin. Lemon, orange, tangerine and white angelica are few examples of citrus based essential oils.

Application of essential oils over surroundings of eye leads to redness and burning sensation in eye henceforth, it should be avoided. It is essential to remove lenses prior to application of essential oils on face as unintentional rubbing of eyes may lead to severe eye conditions.

Usage of certain essential oils like clary sage, Idaho tansy and fennel should be administered under supervision of an accredited medical practitioner as these oils comprise ingredients that performs hormone like activities, which can pose a risk for pregnant women.

Persons with known medical history of hypertension and epilepsy should consult a doctor prior to opting for certain essential oils like hyssop, fennel etc.

Likewise perfumes always test an essential oil on a portion of sensitive skin such as underarm or lower portion of feet, prior to application to make sure that skin is not allergic to oil.

In accordance with the advisories issued by naturopathists, it is necessary to dilute all GRAS essential oils with honey, olive oil or soy milk prior to consumption.

Never mix pure essential oils in water intended for bathing purpose. A bath gel base should be used as a dissolving agent for oils in bath water.

Though, the therapeutic benefits of essential oils are countless but it is recommended that anyone should avoid consumption or appliance of these oils in absence of sound knowledge or guidance.
