Coughing is often a part of airways clearance technique. However, shallow coughing might not remove the mucus from the lungs. To clear your lungs you need deep and controlled cough. To do this, take a deep breath and fill your lungs with air. By contracting the upper abdominal muscles, remove all the air from the lungs through a single forceful cough. This process should be repeated two to three times to clear the lungs. However, forceful coughing should be avoided by people suffering from cystic fibrosis.

The time taken to exhale air through the mouth should be longer than the time taken to inhale air. If you count three to inhale air, you should count six to exhale air.

Mucus clogging the airways could be loosened by taking a suitable expectorant. Once the mucus loosens, it could be easily expelled through coughing. Hot and spicy foods could loosen mucus. Hot peppers, horseradish and warm beverages could break up the mucus. The thick mucus could be liquefied by inhaling eucalyptus, jasmine or peppermint essential oil. Cedar, myrrh and thyme essential oil could act as expectorant. You can massage the chest with a suitable essential oil several times a day.
