Toxic Shock Syndrome Prevention


Presence of toxins in our blood stream is responsible for causing toxic shock syndrome. This is a rare ailment, which can even lead to death.

Symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome

High fever, low blood pressure, with the systolic pressure dipping below 90mm Hg, skin rash, head ache, sore throat, cough, breathing difficulty, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, confusion and multiple organ failure are symptoms of toxic shock syndrome.

Causes of Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxin shock syndrome is caused by toxins released in the blood stream by certain rare strains of bacteria. The bacteria, living in the vagina of woman, are often considered responsible for developing toxic shock. Risk of toxic shock syndrome is highest among menstruating women who use tampons. Tampons are found to encourage growth of vaginal bacteria.

Toxin shock syndrome also results from bacteria responsible for strep throat.

Sometimes toxic shock syndrome may develop from infected wounds. Postpartum infections and certain lesions occurring in connective tissues are also known to be responsible for toxic shock.

According to a recent study conducted at the University of Colorado, nearly twenty percent cases of toxic shock syndrome in children are found to be linked to chronic sinus infection. Sinus infections are characterized by pressure in the cheeks, nasal congestion and cough.

Toxic Shock Syndrome Prevention

Toxic shock syndrome patients need immediate medical attention. The earlier you visit your physician, the faster will be your chances of recovery. However, preventing occurrence of toxic shock is the best way of saving your body from the harmful affect of toxins.

To prevent toxic shock, women should avoid using tampons during their menstrual periods. Among tampons, the super absorbent ones are largely found responsible for causing toxic shock. In order to prevent toxic shock, care should be taken to prevent wound infections. In case of children, if symptoms of sinus infection persist for a long time, and if the symptoms become more severe, parents should seek immediate medical help to prevent toxic shock syndrome.
