Herbs for treating arthritis

Alfalfa

To reduce joint pain, you can drink alfalfa tea. However, lupus patients should avoid alfalfa powder. 1-canavanine, an amino acid found in powdered alfalfa, could worsen the symptoms of lupus.

Black Cohosh

American Indian folk healers prescribe black cohosh root for treating joint inflammation. Black cohosh is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb. It is widely used for treating rheumatoid arthritis. This herb is especially beneficial for postmenopausal women.

Risk of osteoarthritis in women increases after menopause, when the ovaries stop secreting the estrogen hormones. Estrogen prevents degeneration of bone cells. Black cohosh contains plant estrogens that can mimic human estrogen.

This herb could prevent osteoporosis in older women by elevating the estrogen level in the body. According to a study, black cohosh combined with willow bark, guaiacum resin, sarsaparilla and poplar bark could reduce osteoarthritis symptoms.

Celery

This common culinary herb could reduce arthritis pain. Arthritis patients could eat raw or cooked celery seeds and leaves to get rid of joint inflammation and pain. Celery contains a large number of anti-inflammatory compounds. It is a rich source of potassium.

From a cup of celery, you can get more than 340 mg of potassium. Studies have shown that potassium deficiency might worsen the symptoms of arthritis. To reduce acute joint pain, you can drink three cups of celery tea daily.

Boswellia serrata

Boswellia serrata or Indian frankincense could reduce joint inflammation and pain. Boswellic acid present in this herb is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound.
