Treating Anemia With Herbal Medicines

December 26, 2009

Anemia is a health condition characterized by low hemoglobin level in the blood. Low hemoglobin level impairs the capacity of the red blood cells to carry oxygen. When the oxygen circulation in the body falls, we experience fatigue. Anemia can develop from several factors.

Iron deficiency in the body is one of the primary causes of anemia. Iron is the main component needed for hemoglobin production. Abnormalities in the red blood cell and deficiency of vitamin B12 and folic acid can cause certain types of anemia.

Herbal remedies are effective in treating anemia caused by iron deficiency.

Alfalfa
Alfalfa is a rich source of iron. To treat anemia, simmer one tablespoon of the herb in a cup of water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Taking this decoction everyday would help to normalize the hemoglobin level in your blood. To increase the effectiveness of the herbal decoction, mix dandelion leaves, yellowdock and burdock in equal proportions with the alfalfa herb. Take a tablespoon of the herb mix and boil it in a cup of water.

Dong quai
This herb is used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating anemia. Depending on the severity of anemia, taking 3 to 15 grams of dong quai daily could treat anemia. However, this herb is not safe for pregnant and lactating women.

Gentian
This herb increases iron absorption. To treat iron deficient anemia, take one tablespoon of the herb before meals.

Fenugreek leaves
Fenugreek leaves are a rich source of iron. Folk healers recommend fenugreek tea or decoction for treating anemia.

Wormwood
For centuries, wormwood is used for treating anemia. Even Hippocrates recommended this herb as anemia remedy. However, given the addictive property of wormwood, it should not be used for a long period without expert supervision. Pregnant and lactating women should avoid this herb.

Gokulakanta
In Ayurvedic medicine, gokulakanta or Hygrophila spinosa is used for treating anemia. Simmer about 60 grams of gokulakanta root in 500ml of water for about half an hour in a covered vessel. Take 30ml of the herbal decoction two to three times a day, until your anemia is healed.

Dandelion
People suffering from mild anemia could benefit from drinking a cup of dandelion tea twice everyday.
