Treating Digestion Problems With Apple Cider Vinegar

December 23, 2009

What happens when you have digestion problems such as acidity, flatulence, bloating or nausea? Perhaps have an antacid medication to cure your problems. There is no guarantee that the over-the-counter medications could cure your digestion problems. However, apple cider vinegar, a common culinary ingredient often present in your pantry, could provide instant relief from stomach diorders.

Acid reflux remedy

Treating acidity problem with acid might seem an improbable proposition, however, for centuries apple cider vinegar is used as a home remedy for treating acid reflux. Acetic acid is the main component of apple cider vinegar. This is a weak acid. It combines with stomach acid, which is hydrochloric acid to reduce the acidity of the stomach contents.

Vinegar along with acetate salt produced by it prevents the pH level of the stomach from dipping below 3, which is the ideal pH for digestion. By preserving the ideal pH balance in the stomach apple cider vinegar could heal acidity and heartburn. To treat acid reflux, add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and take it when you experience heartburn. If you are suffering from chronic heartburn, taking diluted apple cider vinegar before meals could heal acidity.

Flatulence treatment

Just as excess stomach acid is bad for your digestion, low levels of gastric acid could also impair your digestion causing problems such as flatulence, nausea and bloating. If gastric acid needed for digestion of food is not present in adequate quantities in your stomach, the undigested food will remain in the stomach for a long time. The longer the undigested food remains in the stomach, greater is the possibility of the food to ferment and produce gas.

Flatulence is often associated with low level of gastric acid. Gastric acid secretion can reduce with aging. Prolonged consumption of antacid medicines could even impair gastric acid secretion. Apple cider vinegar replenishes the depleted stomach acid, improving digestion, and curing flatulence, nausea, and bloating. To treat flatulence, take a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar diluted with half a cup of water before meals. To promote digestion consider having salads with apple cider vinegar dressing before meals.
