Treating Dumping Syndrome With Diet

September 17, 2009

Dumping Syndrome, also known as rapid gastric emptying, usually develops after a stomach surgery. Individuals undergoing stomach bypass surgery to lose weight might suffer from Dumping Syndrome.

The severity of the Dumping Syndrome varies from person to person. The symptoms of this condition occur after eating. The undigested foods in the stomach rapidly move into the small intestine, giving rise to several complications.

Dumping Syndrome symptoms

The symptoms of Dumping Syndrome usually occur 15 to 30 minutes after eating. In some cases, individuals experience the symptoms 1 to 3 hours after having a meal. Rich sugary meals could worsen the symptoms. The common symptoms of Dumping Syndrome include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, belching, rapid heartbeat, abdominal cramps or pains, dizziness and fatigue.

People experiencing symptoms of Dumping Syndrome, one to three hours after eating, also experience increased perspiration, anxiety, confusion and fainting. Late symptoms of this condition can also lead to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Dumping Syndrome promotes secretion of excess insulin in the blood stream.

Dumping Syndrome causes

Stomach surgeries, such as gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, gastroenterostomy, fundoplication and vagotomy, where parts of the stomach are removed, increase the risk of developing Dumping Syndrome. Sometimes diabetes and diseases such as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome can lead to this condition. Dumping Syndrome is sometimes the side effect of certain medications.

Dumping Syndrome Home Remedies

Symptoms of Dumping Syndrome could be reduced with dietary changes. In severe cases, medications and surgery are recommended. People suffering from Dumping Syndrome should limit intake of refined carbohydrate and sugar products. Instead of using natural sweeteners, people suffering from Dumping Syndrome can have artificial sweeteners.

Two or more servings of fresh fruits and fruit juices without added sugar can be consumed. Fruits with high pectin, such as apple, peach and plum are recommended for people suffering from Dumping Syndrome. Some people might find it difficult to digest citrus fruits. Dry fruits, canned and frozen fruits preserved in sugar syrup should be avoided.

There is no bar on vegetable consumption. Intake of fiber rich vegetables is encouraged. Depending on the calorie requirement, there is no restriction on vegetable oil and animal protein intake. Instead of taking large meals, Dumping Syndrome sufferers should have five to six small meals. They should not have fluids with meals.
