Treatment for Vasomotor Rhinitis

Usually rhinitis, characterized stuffy or runny nose and sneezing, is triggered by viruses or allergens. However, sometimes, nasal congestion or runny nose does not indicate a viral infection or allergic reaction. Rhinitis that is not caused by allergies is known as vasomotor rhinitis.

Vasomotor rhinitis is a chronic condition. It is also known as non-allergic or idiopathic rhinitis. Nearly ten percent of rhinitis incidences are vasomotor rhinitis. Often rhinitis could be a combination of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis.

Causes of vasomotor rhinitis

Vasomotor rhinitis is triggered by certain irritants. It has been seen that air pollution such as tobacco smoke, perfume or paint fumes, spicy foods, alcohols and certain medicines such as hypertension drugs could cause this condition. Although, people suffering from vasomotor rhinitis are not allergic to these substances, however, these substances tend to irritate the nose of these individuals when they are exposed to these substances.

Vasomotor rhinitis usually develops in dry weather condition. Your emotional condition could even develop vasomotor rhinitis. Changes in air pressure or temperature can trigger vasomotor rhinitis. Extreme sensitivity to these factors irritates the nose even when a person susceptible to vasomotor rhinitis is exposed to low levels of the irritants.

Symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis

The common symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis include runny nose, rhinorrhea, sneezing and nasal congestion. Usually people suffering from vasomotor rhinitis are divided into two groups.

The ‘runners’ are the ones with wet rhinorrhea. Their symptoms are predominately runny nose. The other group of the vasomotor rhinitis sufferers suffers from ‘dry’ symptoms characterized by nasal congestion and minimal rhinorrhea.

Vasomotor rhinitis treatment

If runny nose is the main symptom of vasomotor rhinitis, nasal sprays are effective in treating it. Sometimes topical nasal steroids are recommended for treating the symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis. The nasal steroids work slowly, but nonetheless they could take care of all the symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis such as runny nose, nasal congestion and sneezing.

Antihistamines are only effective when a person is suffering from both vasomotor and allergic rhinitis at the same time. Nasal congestion could be treated and the blocked airways could be opened by inhaling eucalyptus essential oil.
