June 26, 2009

Urinary tract comprises of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Urinary tract infection can occur in any part of the urinary tract. Upper urinary tract infection, which involves infection of kidneys, can become serious at times. Urinary tract infections occur largely in adults. Compared to men, women are more prone to urinary tract infection. However, infections in men and boys can be more serious in nature.

To cure urinary tract infection antibiotic medications are prescribed by doctors. However, mild urinary tract infection could be treated with home remedies.

Urinary tract infection remedies

Cranberry juice

Consuming cranberry juice can help to cure urinary tract infection. Proanthocyanin, a type of plant chemical present in cranberry, prevents the bacteria responsible for the infection from clinging to the walls of the urinary tract. Hence, drinking cranberry juice makes it easy to eliminate the bacteria from the urinary tract.

Garlic

If you are suffering from urinary tract infection, you can eat garlic, which is a popular natural antibiotic.

Baking soda solution

During urinary tract infection, the acid content in the urine increases, which increases irritation while urinating. To normalize the acid level in the urine, add half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water, and drink the solution.

Diet

In the initial stage of the infection, urination becomes painful. However, as the pain ceases with treatment, you should gradually increase water and fluid intake. Drink plenty of water to flush out the bacteria from the urinary tract. Although fresh fruit and vegetable juices are good for your health, but avoid citrus fruit juices during the initial stage of the urinary tract infection. When irritation while urinating decreases after taking medications, you can increase intake of citrus fruits.

The acidic environment provided by these fruits help to kill the bacteria present in the urinary tract. However, remember to drink lots of milk to maintain the acid-alkali balance in the urine. Caffeinated beverages and alcohol should also be avoided during urinary tract infections.
