June 22, 2009
The yellow and orange flowers of the calendula plant are believed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Calendula is therefore used in traditional medicines for curing several diseases and infections. Calendula is rich in flavonoids, caretonoids and triterpene. All these beneficial plant chemicals make calendula a powerful medicinal herb.
Cures ear pain
Ear pains resulting from ear infections could be cured with calendula. Calendula is as effective as most non-herbal medicines in curing ear pain and infections.
Cures conjunctivitis
Calendula can be used for treating chronic conjunctivitis or pink eyes. It kills the bacteria responsible for the redness and swelling of the eye membranes.
Good for the skin
The anti-inflammatory property of calendula is utilized for healing skin inflammation. According to studies, when calendula is applied to surgical incisions or any other types of wounds, the speed of healing increases. Calendula is useful in curing several skin diseases including eczema, acne, sunburn, diaper rash, insect bites and vaginal itching. Applying calendula ointment can also reduce pains and inflammation on the skin. By boosting production of collagen, calendula can also prevent appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. This herb keeps the skin supple and hydrated. It is also good for the scalp.
Good for the stomach
Calendula is also good for the health of the stomach and intestine. By blocking the production of prostaglandin E1, calendula prevents inflammation of stomach and intestine lining. This herb is also capable of preventing the activities of Helicobacter pylori, the bacteria responsible for causing peptic ulcer, gastritis and even stomach cancer.
Fights throat infection
Calendula can be used for curing sore throat. Drinking tea made from dry calendula flowers can sooth throat infections. To make calendula tea, soak two teaspoons of dry calendula flower in a cup of boiling water, for about fifteen minutes. Drink this calendula tea at least three times a day to get the desired result. You can also get relief from sore throat by gargling with calendula water.
