Various Uses of Wormwood

Wormwood is a native of the Mediterranean region. From Europe, this plant has expanded its habitat throughout the planet. These plants are also found in different parts of North America. Wormwood is noted for its various health benefits.
Ancient Greeks believed that wormwood is a natural antidote for hemlock, mushroom and sea dragon poison. The Bedouins used this leaves of wormwood to cure cold and coughs. Modern researches have discovered that the plant chemicals present in wormwood is packed with anti-parasitic, antiseptic, antipyretic and anti-diarrheic properties. Different parts of this plant, including leaves, fruits and flowering tops, are used for curing various ailments.
Wormwood for digestion
Wormwood, as the name suggests, is used for removing intestinal worms. By taking wormwood tincture for about nine days, problems related to intestinal worms could be cured. The bitterness of wormwood, derived from absinthine and absithin, promotes secretion of bile and other digestive juices. Wormwood can also be used for treating inflammation of the liver, stomach and gall bladder. It is suitable for treating jaundice and hepatitis.
Antipyretic property of wormwood
Wormwood can help to reduce fever. Ground wormwood herb mixed with honey helps in reducing temperature. The antiseptic property of wormwood kills virus and bacteria responsible for fevers.
Promotes menstruation
Women suffering from obstructed menstruation are recommended this herb. Obstructed menstruation is responsible for uterine tumors and cancers. Women suffering from irregular periods can also take help of wormwood to regularize their menstrual cycle. This herb can also be used to treat premenstrual syndromes including abdominal cramp, headache, nausea and fatigue.
Good for nerves
Absinthin present in wormwood helps to sooth nerves. Therefore, wormwood can be used for reducing tension, anxiety and migraine headache. However, to avoid any form of addiction, this herb should be used in moderation under expert supervision.
Wormwood should not be taken in the raw form. It is consumed as tea and tincture. Wormwood oil can be used for external application. This herb should not be used for more than a month. Wormwood is harmful for pregnant and lactating women. Excess consumption of wormwood causes abdominal cramps, vomiting, dizziness and problems of the nervous system.
