Vitamins For Healthy Hair
November 5, 2009
Poor hair growth could be a symptom of deficiency of certain vitamins. Studies have shown that certain vitamins are especially suitable for healthy hair growth. These vitamins nourish the cells of the hair follicles, helping them to develop, multiply and produce healthy hair shafts. Absence of essential nutrients in the diet slows down hair growth, producing dull and unhealthy hair.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A and beta-carotenes that are converted into vitamin A in the body are essential for hair growth. This vitamin is needed for the growth of the hair cells. Intake of vitamin A could prevent hair dryness. Red, orange and yellow vegetables are powerhouses of beta-carotenes.
B Vitamins
Several B vitamins including niacin, biotin, vitamin B5, vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 are needed for healthy hair growth. Niacin or vitamin B3 is needed for promoting blood circulation in the scalp. With increase in blood circulation, the cells in the hair follicles receive more oxygen and nutrients. By providing nourishment to the hair follicles, niacin promotes hair growth and prevents premature hair loss. Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, inositol, biotin and vitamin B12 also nourish the hair follicle, prevent hair loss, and aid hair growth. In addition, certain B vitamins, such as biotin and para-aminobenzoic acid could prevent premature graying of hairs. B vitamins are abundantly found in whole grains, eggs, poultry products, milk, diary products, fish and meat.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It helps in the absorption of several nutrients, including vitamin E. For healthy hair growth, you should include adequate amount of vitamin C rich foods in your diet. Citrus fruits are easily available sources of vitamin C.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E promotes cell growth. It promotes blood circulation. This vitamin is needed for healthy hair growth. As a strong antioxidant, vitamin E prevents damage of the hair cells from pollutants. Whole grains, nuts and leafy green vegetables are popular sources of vitamin E.
Side effects of vitamin overdose
Sometimes overdose of vitamins A, C and E can be harmful for your hair. Excess dose of vitamin C could make the scalp flaky. Too much of vitamin A intake can cause hair loss. Vitamin E overdose, by preventing iron absorption, makes the hair dull and brittle.
