What Is Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

October 15, 2009

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is the abnormal bleeding that occurs during the reproductive years of a woman. Usually women suffer from heavy bleeding during the starting of menstruation in their adolescence and at the years around the menopausal period.

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding not only includes the heavy bleeding but also the uneven bleeding that occurs through the vagina.

Symptoms of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

There are different symptoms for dysfunctional uterine bleeding and these symptoms may be different for different persons. Some of the symptoms are

In between menstrual periods some women may have bleeding. Bleeding may happen after having sexual intercourse. During menstrual periods some women have heavy bleeding while for others the bleeding lasts for more than seven days. Some others may have bleeding that takes place after menopause.

There might be irregular menstrual cycle. Infertility, hot flashes, mood swings, tenderness in the vagina are some other symptoms seen in such women. Normally menstrual cycle occurs in between 21 to 35 days but in some others the cycle will be of interval less than 21 days every time.

Causes of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

Hormonal imbalance is the main reason for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Too much of estrogen and little progesterone leads to abnormal bleeding through vagina. Excessive estrogen cause the endometrial lining of the uterus to grow and it becomes thick.

At the time of periods when your body disposes this lining there will be heavy bleeding. This hormonal imbalance also confuses your body about the time of shedding this lining and this leads to irregular bleeding. This hormonal imbalance is more common in teenagers and in women nearing their menopause.

Fibroids and polyps in the uterus can also cause abnormal bleeding. Even thyroid problems can leads to dysfunctional bleeding. Women in forty’s and fifty’s must check their dysfunctional bleeding for uterine cancer.

Risk Factors for Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

Obesity is a major cause for abnormal bleeding as it may leads to hormonal imbalance. Emotional stress, excessive exercise may also increase your risk for having a hormonal imbalance.
