Breast cancer is one of the common forms of cancer in women. Women diagnosed with breast cancer should adopt a diet that protects them from the side effects of cancer treatment and prevents recurrence of the disease.

Consume Watercress:

The cancer tumors need nutrients to grow. New blood vessels that develop around the malignant tissues supply oxygenated blood to the cancer tumors to facilitate their growth. By preventing development of new blood vessels, the growth of the cancer tumors could be prevented.

Watercress is a rich source of a compound known as phenylethly isothiocyanate (PEITC), which impairs the function of a protein associated with development of blood vessels that supply nutrients and blood to the breast cancer tumors. According to a University of Southampton study, the level of cancer fighting molecules in the blood could be increased significantly by consuming 80 grams of watercress every day.

Increase Consumption Of Fruits And Vegetables:

Breast cancer patients should pack their daily diet with fresh fruits and vegetables. Although five servings of vegetables and fruits are recommended for healthy living, breast cancer patients could further increase their vegetable and fruit portions to almost nine servings a day. Your veggie rich diet should contain dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, berries and fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene and lycopene.

Increase Vitamin D Intake:

Deficiency of vitamin D increases the risk of cancers. Breast cancer patients usually have low levels of vitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D supplements might be beneficial for women suffering from breast cancer. Vitamin D fortified juices and cereals, milk, egg, shrimp and fish should be included in the diet of breast cancer patients.

Avoid Alcohol:

Drinking increases the risk of developing hormone-fed breast cancer. Studies have shown that even moderate drinking is not safe for women with a previous history of breast cancer. Compared to non-drinkers, regular drinkers have 51 per cent greater risk of dying from breast cancer.

Breast cancer patients should take one to two tablespoons of flaxseed daily. Flaxseed is a source of an anti-estrogen compound that prevents development of estrogen responsive tumors in the breast.
