Diet For Arthritis

Arthritis is characterised by severe inflammation of the muscles and joints which leads to severe pain in the bones and muscles.

A person having acute arthritis suffers from stiffness of the joints. The damage of the cartilage hinders movement in a person. This chronic disorder of the muscles can be controlled by modification in diet. If a proper diet is followed it will help to get relief from arthritis to a great extent.

Obesity can worsen arthritis as the muscles and joints have to bear extra weight. Therefore an arthritis patient should avoid high fat foods like deep fried foods, cookies, pastries, ice cream, red meat, etc.

Other foods items that need
to be discarded from the diet include white flour, coffee, sunflower oil, ginseng, corn oil, pasta, white sugar, lima beans, livers, mussels, asparagus, yeast, oranges, berries, baked dishes, lemon, bacon, chocolates, carbonated drinks, black tea, refined wheat and processed foods that contain additives. Avoid fishes like sardines and mackerels.

One can include lean chicken or lean mutton
in the diet in limited amounts. Moderation is the watchword when it comes to certain food items for arthritis patients. These include salmon, nuts, mushrooms, cauliflower, lentils and a variety of legumes.

Vegetables pay an important role in every diet plan. However one has to choose carefully while selecting vegetables to get relief from arthritis.

Vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, pepper, eggplant and other starchy vegetables should not be eaten. Vegetables that help to soothe arthritis pain include turnips, carrots, parsnips, cucumber, radish, celery, collard, kale, lettuce, rutabagas, broccoli and spinach. Sweet potato is also very helpful in treating arthritis.

Fruits that aid in getting relief from muscle and joint pains include banana, grapes, pineapple, apples, peaches, cherries, oranges, avocadoes, blueberries and papaya. Fresh fruit juices should be included in the diet.

Fish oil is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and it helps to provide respite from arthritis pain. Foods rich in Vitamin E like almonds and walnuts should be consumed in moderated amounts.

The food items which help to reduce inflammation of the joints and muscles should be consumed in adequate amounts. These include ginger, pumpkin seeds, olive oil, turmeric, hazel nuts, oysters, guavas, raspberries and licorice. Drinking a cup of green tea 2-3 times a day also helps in treating arthritis.
