Sore throat is the step sister of cold and fever. It is caused by bacterial infections, tonsils in the throat, excessive smoking, talking and shouting loudly or change in weather conditions. Breathing through mouth causes dryness in the throat which also causes sore throat.

Sore throat is not a very serious medical condition, but it can lead to discomfort in chewing and swallowing of food. It is common both in children and adults.

Sore throat is characterized by pain, scratching and inflammation of the throat. High fevers, headaches accompanied with frequent vomiting are also sore throat symptoms. There may be redness or swelling at the back of the throat. Voice can become hoarse and may cause difficulty in speaking. Dryness in the throat leads to dehydration and easy exhaustion. In chronic cases of sore throat there may be blood or phlegm discharge from the mouth. Due to severe throat infections, there may be a rash on the skin which can lead to outbreak of measles or meningitis.

Generally, in the event of sore throat we tend to rely on strong medications like antibiotics or the over-the-counter drugs. Simple home remedies for sore throat can do wonders in healing it. Salt water gargles twice a day are very effective. Add basil leaves, fenugreek seeds or henna leaves to it for quick relief. Gargling with apple cedar vinegar is also a commendable sore throat remedy. Inhaling of steam is the easiest and the effective method. It opens up the nasal passage, clears throat and chest congestion.

In a glassful of warm milk, add turmeric powder and drink it before sleeping. This will provide relief. Drinking herbal tea with herbs like chamomile also helps. Combine a teaspoon of honey and lemon juice in a glass of warm water and consume it first thing in the morning. Try these simple tips. The problem of sore throat generally lasts for a couple of weeks. If the problem persists for more than three weeks, consult a doctor. Sore throat for more than three weeks can be a sign of severe illness like cancer or AIDS. Eat a light diet and don’t unnecessarily exert yourself. Take proper rest and keep your vocal chords intact.
