Home Remedies for Asthma

Introduction

Asthma is a disease related to respiratory system. When the lungs get filled with cough or any foreign body enters into the windpipe it causes partial blocking or irritation. This condition is termed as asthma. This is a common disease which affects nearly 10-20% of the total world population. It affects people of all the ages; however it is very common amongst the children. In most of the cases the disease being mild is often not recognized and is left untreated.

In asthma, airways get narrowed. These narrowed airways may lead to coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These symptoms get worst at night time. It is observed that it affects twice as many boys as girls in childhood; more girls than boys develop asthma as teenagers, and in adulthood, the ratio gets equalized say 1:1 males to females.

The conditions of seriousness vary from person to person. In some cases as mild as no effects and in extreme cases also death. It is generally common in cold air, dusty environment, dust and acid fumes humid conditions, eating allergic food product, emotional stress, tobacco smoke, or even respiratory viral infection.

In Canada itself about 3 million people are affected, and approximately 20 children and 500 adults die each year from asthma. However, most deaths from asthma can be prevented by adequate treatments. There is a general trend of increased deaths and hospitalizations from asthma recorded in all the industrialized countries of the world, including Canada.

Home Remedies for Asthma

Asthma is certainly a killer disease if left untreated. But the real fact is, there are many ways in which asthma can be treated at home itself. The following are some very effective home remedies for the treatment of asthma:-

  • In case of severe asthmatic attacks, the following remedy can be used to get immediate relief. Take a ripe banana and warm it on a slow flame on the gas stove. Then sprinkle some black pepper on it. Eat this. This is a miraculous cure. Almost immediately, the asthmatic pains will subside and there will be relief. However, this is not a method of treatment; the peppered banana will only help to allay the asthmatic attack.
  • Take some leaves of the tulsi plant (Holy Basil, Ocimum sanctum). Then get hold of some honey extracted from the hives of small honeybees. Take 13 milliliters of honey and 20 milliliters of the ground paste of tulsi leaves. Mix these properly and eat them. This will indeed provide relief from the asthmatic attacks. This is one of the best home remedies for asthma.
  • When you feel that your breath is getting choked up, take some tulsi leaves and sprinkle some black salt on it. Put these in the mouth. This will surely provide great benefits and will stop the asthmatic attack from coming on.
  • Every night, before retiring, eat some roasted grams and then wash them down with a glass of milk. This will clear the congestions in the respiratory tract and will provide respite to the complaints of asthma.
  • There is one very sure-shot remedy for all kinds of asthmatic problems. If your asthma does not seem to go by anything else, this remedy is sure to work. Take an aged turmeric piece (the older, the better) and make a fine powder of it by grinding it with a mortar and pestle. Then take a tablespoonful of this powder and add to it two tablespoonfuls of honey. Eat this. The honey should also be as old as possible. This will surely work wonders in stopping the asthma attacks. You can have this remedy once every day without fear of any side effects as a method of prevention.
  • If your asthma is in the preliminary stages, then you can use this remedy to stop it there and in fact heal it completely. Every night before going to sleep, chew on some black peppercorns. You can mix these with the leaves of the basil if you can get them; this will provide better benefits. Within a few moments, the asthmatic problems will subside and you will feel freer.
  • Take some ginger and one fruit of the chebulic myrobalan (haritaki, Terminalia chebula). Take both of them in quantities of five grams each. Put these in warm water and consume it each night. Drink this every three to four hours in your waking hours. Do this remedy for ten to twelve days continuously. This will clear up the chest cavity and will keep the asthmatic attacks away. A diligent use of this remedy could also remove the asthma from your constitution for ever. This is one of the important home remedies for asthma.
  • This is a remedy that works for any kind of asthmatic attacks, however sever they may be. Prepare chutney of 250 grams of the Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) by grinding it into a fine paste, taken along with 50 grams of banyan root and 125 milliliters of honey. Eat this in small amounts regularly. It will keep the asthma away.
  • One very simple but highly effective remedy for keeping asthma away is to take one glassful of limejuice in which some a teaspoonful of ginger juice has been mixed. This kind of lemonade-gingerade juice helps to relieve the asthma immensely, and it will also reduce the frequency of the attacks drastically.
  • Honey is considered to be one of the simplest and safest remedies for controlling asthma. Just holding a bottle of honey below the nose is sufficient to begin breathing freer and easier. If this does not work, then you can add two teaspoonfuls of honey to a glassful of milk. This, taken at night, will certainly work at preventing the onset of the asthmatic attacks.
  • An asthmatic patient must have about three to four dry figs each morning. Figs have the capacity of clearing the respiratory tract, due to which asthmatic attacks do not occur.
  • One of the useful home remedies for asthma is to take half a tablespoonful of safflower seeds and mix them in a tablespoonful of honey. Have this once every day. This will indeed help to keep the asthmatic attacks away.
  • Add a teaspoonful of turmeric powder and put it in a glassful of milk. Have two to three such glasses of milk each day. This is a very effective remedy to keep the asthmatic attacks away.
  • Put ten garlic cloves in a glassful of milk. Take this milk in a vessel and boil it for about ten minutes. Then let it cool and drink it. This is one of the most wonderful remedies in case of recurrent seasonal asthma.
  • Every night before going to bed, put some drinking water in a copper vessel. In the morning when you wake up, drink up this water. Do this before eating anything, and even before brushing the teeth. This water contains some mineral copper from the vessel in which it was kept, and copper is known to act very favorably in de-congesting the respiratory tract.
  • Put some Bishop's weed seeds in water and boil the solution. When the solution starts giving off fumes, inhale the vapors till they come. Do this once every night. It’s a good preventive therapy.
  • Take about six pieces of cloves and put them in three tablespoonfuls of water taken in a bowl. Boil this solution till the cloves are properly exuded into the water. Then add one teaspoonful of honey in this. Take this decoction thrice everyday. This decoction acts like an expectorant and acts very effectively in treating people with asthma.
  • Take a small cluster of drumstick leaves and add it to a cupful of water. Keep this water for boiling. Let it go on boiling for about three to four minutes. When it has boiled for so long, then take it off the flame and strain it. Then add some salt and pepper in it. Add a small dash of lemon juice in it. This is a very safe but effective remedy for asthmatic patients. It must be had once or twice in a day.
  • You can prepare a good household herbal remedy for treating asthma in the following manner. You will need to put one teaspoonful of asafetida, two teaspoonfuls of honey, one teaspoonful of betel leaves' juice and one teaspoonful of the juice of spring onions. Mix all of these to form a pasty solution. You will hare to have this twice or thrice in a day.
  • In a bowl mix some amount of ginger juice, pomegranate juice and honey; all taken in equal amounts. Then take one teaspoonful of this juice once or twice each day.
  • Another good home remedy for asthma is to take two teaspoonfuls of fenugreek seeds and boil them in a glassful of water. Boil them till the time only about one-third of the solution remains behind. Drink this solution once a day.
  • Drink plenty of liquids, say 8-10 glasses a day. This will help the secretions to remain loose.
  • Make a paste of rock salt and old ghee or mustard oil. Rub this on the chest. This will prevent in asthmatic attacks.

The following are some of the risk factors which asthma patients must avoid:-

(iv) Take special care that your bedroom is free from allergen material.

(v) Dust your room often but not with broomstick instead if possible use a vacuum cleaner.

(vi) Wear a scarf round your mouth and nose during cold weather to be on the safer side. This will warm the air and prevent the cold air from entering in and reaching the sensitive airways

(vii) Use a plastic cover over your mattress and if possible wash this in hot water every week.

(viii) If you have an air conditioner than see to it that you change its filter periodically.
