Home Remedies for Controlling Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is considered to be one of the most lethal of the lifestyle diseases today. It is killing a large number of the world population every year, and the number is only going up each year. Awareness and modification in the lifestyle seem to be the only way to control this silent monster, but there is very less effort going on in that area.

Diabetes mellitus is a condition of hyperglycemia, i.e. a condition when the blood sugar level increases. The beta cells in the islets of Langerhans in the human pancreas secrete a hormone known as the insulin. This insulin is responsible for the proper utilization of sugars, especially glucose, in the human body. In case the insulin is deficient, the sugars will not be able to be assimilated properly and they will be retained in the bloodstream. This is the condition known as diabetes mellitus.

There are three main types of diabetes mellitus. They are:-

(i) Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 – This is the Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, which occurs in young people and children. For this reason, it is also known as juvenile diabetes. In this type of diabetes, the person has a total absence of the insulin hormone in the body.

(ii) Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 – This is the Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, which occurs generally in people of the middle age. In this type of diabetes mellitus, the person's body does produce insulin, but it is not enough to meet the requirement of the body, or else, the diabetes is not able to be utilized in the blood properly.

(iii) Gestational Diabetes Mellitus – This type of diabetes mellitus occurs during pregnancy in women, when there are several hormonal changes occurring in the body. This is a temporary type of diabetes, and it usually corrects itself after childbirth.

There could be some other causes for diabetes mellitus, such as a disease of the pancreas, malnutrition, hormonal imbalances, etc. Factors such as the age of the person, gender, diet and nutrition, active or sedentary lifestyle, etc. play a very important role in influencing the blood sugar levels of the body.

Home Remedies for Diabetes Mellitus

One most important thing to be remembered is that there is no definitely cure for diabetes mellitus. This is a disease that lasts for life. However, attempts can be made to keep the amount of blood sugar in check. If that is done, then a person with diabetes mellitus can also lead an almost normal healthy and long life.

Another thing to note is that none of the remedies given below can work by themselves in treating diabetes mellitus. No treatment is possible without proper dietary control. The diet should be certainly low in carbohydrates and fats, but it should also be nutritious at the same time.

Read the following home remedies. They are good at bringing the blood sugar level down. But most importantly, these remedies are safe to try out for a diabetic patient, without any side-effects.

The bitter melon (karela, Momordica charantia) is one of the best home remedies for diabetes mellitus. For three months continuously, prepare a dish of the bitter melon in ghee. Have this dish daily. This will definitely help in bringing the blood sugar to a manageable level.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) is another greatly beneficial remedy for controlling blood sugar. Every morning have a cupful of the juice of the fenugreek leaves and then chew the hard seeds of the herb. This will gradually reduce the blood sugar and will help to bring the body back to normal. This is one of the good diabetes mellitus home remedies.

Every morning have tomatoes, oranges and jamuns (Indian plum, Syzygium cumini). The total amount of these three should come to 300 grams per day. This will certainly bring the blood sugar down if done diligently and on a regular basis.

Soak some black raisins in water and keep them overnight. When you wake up in the morning, strain this solution. Drink the clear water that is obtained. This is a wonderful remedy for controlling the blood sugar. Do it on a regular basis. This is one of the useful diabetes mellitus treatment.

One of the best remedies for controlling diabetes mellitus is definitely the amalaki (Indian gooseberry, Emblica officinalis). Soak a single gooseberry in a glassful of water and let it remain for some time. Then filter this water, and squeeze the juice of a single lemon in the water. Drink this every morning without fail. This is one of the best remedies to get rid of the excessive amount of sugar in the blood. This is one of the effective diabetes mellitus remedy.

There is one very good remedy with the gooseberry, fenugreek and bitter melon all three taken together. Take all of these three in an equal proportion by weight. Dry them, grind them and make them all into powder form. Mix these powders. Take one teaspoonful of this powder once in the morning, once in the afternoon and then once in the evening. This is one of the surest ways to bring the level of blood sugar in level and to in fact seek a permanent remedy from the condition of diabetes mellitus. This is one of the useful natural remedy for diabetes mellitus.

Take some bay leaves and grind them into a powder. The bay leaves must be suitably dry so that it will be possible to grind them into powder. The consistency of this powder must be so fine that it would pass through a coarse cotton cloth. Put five grams of this powder in a glassful of warm water. Drink this water for ten continuous days. At the end of ten days, you will find that your hyperglycemia has positively gone down. This is one of the effective diabetes mellitus cure.

If you have high blood sugar, then use the following remedy. It works at bringing the blood sugar level down, and then maintaining it at the low value. Extract the juices of a raw mango and an Indian plum in equal amounts by volume. Mix these juices together. Drinking these juices thrice in a day, continuously for a month (without a break in between) will certainly help to bring the blood sugar level down. This is one of the effective home remedy for diabetes mellitus.

Take the seed of a jamun fruit and of a haritaki fruit (Chebulic myrobalan, Terminalia chebula). Grind these two together into a fine paste. Then add this in a minimum amount of honey, and lick the paste. If you are apprehensive in using honey, you can also mix the powders in buttermilk. Consuming this continuously for a month will definitely bring the level of blood sugar down. This is a very potent Ayurvedic remedy and it is one of the most effective of all remedies that can be done at the household level to control diabetes mellitus. This is one of the best home remedies for diabetes mellitus.

The fruit of the bael (Aegle marmelos) is very efficient in controlling the level of sugar in the blood. Take about ten to twelve leaves of the bael and the neem, five to six leaves of the tulsi (holy basil, Ocimum sanctum), five pieces of large raisins known as sultanas and five pieces of the black pepper. Grind them all together and make pellets of all of these ingredients. Take two of these pellets each day, one in the morning and one in the evening. This will definitely show beneficial results in a period of three to four days.

Take some tender leaves of the jamun and grind them to a fine paste. Then take this paste continuously for 25 days. This remedy will help to assimilate the sugar in the tissues and will stop the amount of sugar flowing through the urine. This is one of the effective diabetes mellitus treatment.

You will need some raw bananas for this therapy. These bananas can be identified by their total green peel and their hardness. Chop them into small cubes and then dry them in the sun. This will remove all the moisture from the bananas. When done, grind the bananas to a fine powder. Take one teaspoonful of this powder put in cow's milk on a daily basis. The benefit of this remedy is that it supplements the body with the requisite amount of carbohydrates, but does not add to the sugar level in the blood. This is a good diet for diabetes mellitus.

Another good home remedy for diabetes is the powder of the guduchi herb (giloy, Tinospora cordifolia) which is very effective in lowering the level of the blood sugar. Put a teaspoonful of this powder in about one teaspoonful of honey and consume it on a daily basis.

The Triphala choorna, a valuable product of Ayurvedic medicine, is considered to be one of the wonder drugs for controlling diabetes mellitus. This is a mixture of three of the most effective herbs required for keeping blood sugar levels in check. They are the amalaki (Indian Gooseberry, Emblica officinalis), bibhitaki (Belleric Myrobalan, Terminalia belerica) and haritaki (Chebulic Myrobalan, Terminalia chebula). For diabetic conditions, put a teaspoonful of this choorna in about 30 milliliters of cold water and consume it once every day. Your blood sugar will be kept in check.

Chew on some leaves of the Butea tree on a daily basis. These leaves are beneficial in keeping the value of blood sugar in check.

This is a good home remedy for diabetes to prevent diabetes mellitus if you have a family history of the disease. Take ten fresh and fully grown curry leaves every morning. Wash them and eat them raw. Continue this therapy for three months in succession. This remedy is also very effective in keeping the total body weight down.

Prepare a decoction of the bark of the mahua tree (Madhuca indica) in water. Consume a cupful of this decoction once every day. This is a very good method of keeping the blood sugar under check.

A decoction of the whole plant or the buds of the Tenner's Cassia is also very good remedy for controlling diabetes mellitus. You can also take a teaspoonful of the powder of any part of this herb, mix it with an equal amount of honey and consume. It will work at assimilating the glucose in the blood.

Guidelines to Control Blood Sugar Levels in Diabetes Mellitus

The whole purpose of diabetes mellitus treatment is to keep the values of blood sugar in check. Apart from the home remedies given above, there are some very significant things you can do to keep the blood sugar levels within safe limits. The following are some guidelines:-

(i) Lead an active lifestyle. Do some active work each day, and in general, try to tire out your body within a particular limit. This will burn down some of the calories in the body.

(ii) Keep strict dietary control. Avoid all sweet and oily foods. Eating sugars is the surest way to increase blood sugar level. Always include at least one bitter dish in each meal.

(iii) Monitor your blood sugar level on a daily basis. Ask your doctor what blood sugar levels are okay for you. Then make attempts to maintain the sugar at that level. Note that if your sugar level goes below this limit, then also it is dangerous, as it can lead to hypoglycemia.

(iv) Take your insulin injections regularly. This will help utilize the excess amount of sugar in the blood.

(v) Do not take a lot of stress. Diabetic people are more vulnerable to cardiovascular diseases, which can be aggravated by stress.

(vi) Keep your body weight in control. Obese people are much more likely to retain higher amounts of sugars in their blood. If you have diabetes, you must seriously consider working out to keep your body weight down.
