Home Remedies for Hangover

Feel a little off balance after the last boy’s night out? Are you totally repelled by the thought of alcohol? Do not worry. Your tastes have not gone for a toss. You are simply suffering from a hangover. Known as veisalgia in medical terms, the hangover is the after effect of excessive consumption of alcohol. This article highlights the causes and symptoms of hangover and also elucidates some effective remedies.

Hangover is an after effect of an off limits quantity of an alcoholic beverage. This means, you have consumed excess amount of the drink. Your body cannot take it. It begins to show some symptoms. Immediately after you have downed the large dose of drinks, you will feel nothing. After sometime, you might feel terribly drowsy. At this point, please remember not to venture anywhere out on a vehicle or even walk on the road. Your brain is in a dormant state and you may take half and hour to add one and one. With this condition, thinking of driving an automobile would be absolutely foolish. Not only will you be risking your life, you are also putting other drivers’ life in jeopardy.

Best thing is to go for a long deep sleep. The problem starts when you’ve woken up from the dream like sleep. Only difference is, you feel as though you’ve woken up to a nightmare. Your head is paining. You feel dizzy and feel like heading straight to the wash basin and retch empty the contents of the stomach. But you find that you are so tired that you cannot move. Welcome to the symptoms of hangover. This is one of the useful hangover cure.

Symptoms of hangover range from mild to harsh. Mild symptoms include a nagging headache and tiredness. Loss of appetite and inability to sleep are also some common symptoms. In extreme cases, the headache is unbearable and the motor functions are erratic. The person suffering from hangover is sensitive to even mild light and sound. He is highly irritable and has blurred orientation. The best thing at this stage would be to try and get some rest even if it means popping a few pain killers or an aspirin to relieve the victim of the hangover. All these symptoms call for the home remedies for hangover to be put into action immediately.

Hangover treatment - Ethanol, a common ingredient in all alcohols causes dehydration. This results in a dry mouth and lethargy. When the body is devoid of enough fluids, the brain shrinks a little away from the skull. This causes the pounding headache. Replacing the lost fluids with water will eliminate this problem and restore the brain to its previous position. The effect of alcohol felt by the stomach lining is the cause for nausea. Stomach lining is very sensitive and alcohol being a strong fluid is harsh on the walls of the stomach. When the liver enzymes try and break the ethanol present in alcohol, the by products formed prevent the supply of glucose to other cells. As glucose is the primary source of energy for all living cells, the person suffering from a hangover feels tired and suffers from fatigue. This is one of the useful natural remedy for hangover.

As the old adage, ‘prevention is better than cure’ goes; limiting your consumption of alcohol is one of the best preventive home remedies for hangover. There still hasn’t been any breakthrough in finding immediate hangover home remedies. Consuming vitamin B6 and rehydration is known to produce some sobering effect. It is the deficiency of magnesium which causes some of the symptoms of a hangover. Consuming magnesium supplements will replace the magnesium lost in the body due to alcohol consumption and offset the symptoms. Rosiglitazone and acetylcysteine are some drugs which can combat hangover symptoms. For a mild hangover, eating good nutritious food and drinking plenty of water would be enough to replace the lost fluids and nutrients. This will eventually eliminate hangover symptoms.
