Home Remedies for Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

A varicose vein is an enlarged and usually gnarled vein. Any vein can become a varicose vein but most varicose veins are located in the legs and the feet. Varicose veins are usually found in the feet or legs due to the fact that most people do a lot of walking. The presser of walking and standing is what causes varicose veins. For most people varicose veins are only an appearance issue and not a medical issue. Although there are times when varicose veins can lead to other serious issue and can also be a sign of other disorders of your circular system.

Symptoms And Signs Of Varicose Veins

Although there are some people who never experience any pain or discomfort before the appearance of varicose veins. For most people there will be signs before varicose veins appear. Some of these signs are itching around a vein or an achy or heavy feeling in your legs can also signal the sign of up coming varicose veins. Long periods of sitting or standing will usually make your legs feel worse. If you see the appearance of skin ulcers near, around or on your ankles might represent a sever form of vascular disease and will require immediate medical attention.

Causes Of Varicose Veins

Veins in your legs have to pump blood from the bottom of your feet all the way back to your heart, working against gravity. To do this there are small valves in your veins that open to allow the blood to travel to the heart and close to keep the blood from falling back to the bottom of your body. With added pressure or strain on your legs from walking, standing or sitting and also from age veins are weakened causing them stretch. When this happens blood that should be flowing to your heart is left to pool up in the veins. The veins will become enlarged and this results in a varicose vein. Varicose veins will be blue in color because they are filled with blood that has lost its oxygen.

Risk Factors For Varicose Veins

There are several risk factors for varicose veins. Aging can cause wear on the veins over time and cause the valves in the veins to malfunction. Genetics can also be a risk factor. If you have members that have or had varicose veins there is a better chance that you too will end up with varicose veins. An over weight person forces their legs to carry a larger amount of weight, which causes more pressure on their legs and causes varicose veins. Being in the same position for long periods of time can cause varicose veins, since blood does not flow well when the body is in the same position for long periods of time. Lastly women are more at risk for varicose veins than men. Hormone changes in women during pregnancy, menstruation and menopause causes a vein walls to relax. Taking birth control pills or hormone supplements can also cause varicose veins since they cause a change in the normal hormone levels in the body.
