Home Remedies for Swelling of Gums

Introduction

Swelling of the gums occurs due to lack in dental and oral hygiene. Swelling of the gums is not a disease in itself, but it is a symptom of some other underlying ailment. The following are some of the important causes of swelling of the gums:-

(i) Gingivitis

(ii) Pyorrhea or Periodontitis

(iii) Infection of the gums or the oral cavity

(iv) Monilia

(v) Lack of proper nourishment

(vi) Allergies

(vii) Leukemia

When gums get swollen, the following symptoms are observed:-

(i) The gums become upraised, and recede so that the teeth look longer.

(ii) Gums become reddened and there can be yellowish patches of pus accumulation seen in them.

(iii) The gums pain when they are touched.

(iv) The teeth become shaky and loose. Interspaces between the teeth may increase.

(v) In more inflamed condition, there may be bleeding from the gums.

Home Remedies for Swelling of Gums

Swollen gums are indeed very distressing as they put a dampener on anything we try to eat. Also, they may be painful and bleeding. Hence, a person with swollen gums will try to seek some remedy for them as soon as possible. The following are some very good remedies that can be done at home in order to treat swelling of gums.

Ignite a small twig of the sheesham tree. This will produce a frothy discharge from the other cut end. Apply this froth on the gums. It is a very good remedy to stop the swelling and even bleeding of the gums. This is one of the useful home remedies for swelling of gums.

Take 50 grams of the essence of the rose flower and squeeze half a lemon in it. Mix these thoroughly and then put it in the mouth. Keep the liquids in the mouth for as long as you can and then throw it out. Do these three to four times in a day. This will definitely bring the gums back to normal. This is one of the useful natural remedy for swelling of gums.

Prepare a decoction of the bark of the babul tree (Acacia arabica) by boiling it in water till the water reduces to half its quantity and then cooling it. Use this water for gargling. This reduces the swelling of the gums and also allays the associated pains.

Another effective swelling of gums treatment is to put some salt in ginger and make a good paste of it. Mix them properly. Rub these delicately on the gums several times in a day. This is good treatment for swollen gums.

Take a glassful of boiled water. Squeeze in this the juice of one lemon. Use this water for gargling. Do this at least twice a day. This will reduce the swelling of the gums and also mitigate the bad odor that emanates from the mouth when the gums are swollen. This is one of the effective swelling of gums cure.

Collect some leaves of the mehandi plant (henna, Lawsonia inermis) and boil them in water. When the leaves have boiled for about fifteen minutes, then strain the solution and use the filtrate to take gargles. This must be done twice a day. This is a very fast-acting remedy for solving the problem of swollen gums. This is one of the best home remedies for swelling of gums.

Take some oil of castor seeds and mix it in camphor to get a pasty consistency. Apply this paste on the gums once in the morning and once in the evening. This is very good remedy for reducing the swelling of the gums. This is one of the effective home remedy for swelling of gums.

Another effective swelling of gums home remedies is roast some ajwain (Bishop's weed) in an open pan. Then crush them and grind them into a coarse consistency. Add in this powder two to three drops of mustard oil. Apply this on the gums with slight pressures. This will not only reduce the swelling of the gums, but it will also make the teeth stronger and healthier.

Prepare a powder of alum by grinding it in a crucible. Apply this powder on the gums with delicate pressure. Do this once a day. This will eliminate the swelling of the gums and bring them back to normal. It is also quite helpful in maintaining overall dental health and hygiene. This is one of the best home remedies for swelling of gums.

In order to get immediate (but temporary) relief from the painful swelling of gums, you might try taking some warm salt water in the mouth and swirling it around the gums several times. This can also be done with an antiseptic mouthwash solution.

How to get rid of Swelling of Gums

Swelling of gums can be prevented to some extent by maintaining proper oral and dental hygiene. The following tips must be borne in mind:-

(i) Brush your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush at least twice a day – once after waking up in the morning and once before retiring for the night.

(ii) Floss regularly, and remove all embedded particles in the teeth with a toothpick.

(iii) Gargle thoroughly after each meal.

(iv) Drink a lot of water, and consume a fair deal of citrus juices.

Thank you for your advice.

But, please do not cheat repeating endlessly the same words, the ones that you put in bold, to catch the Google crawlers it is *very* annoying and disrespectful.

If the title says what the article is for, you don't have to repeat it so many times in every paragraph.

I got gum swelling and severe pain along with gland of same side with severe pain in half of my face i.e. in left portion with feverish feeling. Before it I suffered from constipation. Is it because of heat?

Salt water works! My gum infections CAN NOT BE DUE to LACK of oral Hygene as stated above in this article! There is something seriously wrong with my teeth/mouth! Xrays, cleanings and still it keeps coming back in different areas and no one knows why it's happening?!:0

Dear Doctor,

As i write to you now, am seriously suffering from swollen and painful gum which started last week on Friday morning. Swelling keeps on increasing night and days. I have been trying painkillers like panadol and aspirin which sometimes reduce the pain but after some hours the pain will again restart. I also tried to use worm water and salt but the situation still getting worst and where am now there are not professional
medical personnel to help unless i have to travel long distance of two days.

Please i need your help as soon as you can.

Thanks

Please, go to the dentist. None of these are likely to do anything but alleviate symptoms temporarily.

Using mouth wash every morning and night helps the gum swelling turn pink again and slowly go down. you cant half [@] it on the mouthwash swish it around for about five min. the more it burns the more it seem to work

I found that for me a slice of garlic clove on the gum seems to help.. It will seriously burn for a bit, and then when the pain stops, spit it out, about 5 min or so. Then let your mouth dry out and it helps me to sleep when my gums hurt. Hope this helps someone.

have used a paste made of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda in a spoon and dip toothbrush into this to brush in and around teeth and gums.. kills bacteria and good for removing plaque. need to rinse with water ...
#40 - bill - 03/06/2011 - 00:08
the paste made from the peroxide and baking soda is the best answer. however now take a vitamin e soft gel and a vitamin a/d soft gel put in the mouth on the area of the bleeding and bacteria. break open each soft gel cap with ur teeth. move the liquid around in ur mouth with ur tongue and move the liquid around on the out side of ur mouth with ur hand rubbing ur jaw.

Pray for help, try some home remedies, look for humanistic dentist, and don't give up! Pray that the "system" will make it to where ordinary people can get great dental care here in the US! The "system" (mostly) only allows the "rich" to get dental care...needs to change! I will rely on God...I'm serious.....to provide a way for my needed dental/gum care! He knows how...for sure!
#42 - jimjet - 04/04/2011 - 00:14
Folks, most $$$-challenged people cannot afford dental care. Most dentists will not work with you, either! We have to change the system! What good do dental advances do if no one but the rich can afford them? And FEW dentists will be charitable toward you (money, money)! Let ONE charitable dentist get on this site and SAY COMETHING...such as "I will help you!" Mainly, just ask God to provide a way to get dental treatment as I have done! Some would scoff at this statement, but that would be unwise for them to do! :) God cares for you..and for me....but---very few dentists do! Let's pray for a change in the hearts and minds of dentists in this country! (By the way, Mr. Dentist, we await your words on this site!)

I have a receeded gumline at my eye tooth with a lot of my root exposed. Pain flares up in this area periodically. Today it is severe. Sometimes the flare UPS are sinus related, but I don't think so this time. I had been using Anbesol, but can't find it. I can't sleep and just want to pull this tooth out!
#46 - eeebee - 08/26/2011 - 08:56
i have swollen gums for a year or so, but my dentist seems to ignore it. It's ok bcoz i dont feel any pain. but now, the swelling seems to hurt a bit. i brush twice a day, i floss, i gargle, but i dont know why there is still swelling and bleeding. i have been gargling claradone, it's a sort of like a mouthwash with iodine. im not sure if it really helps coz for 2 weeks, the swelling is still the same. it's the pain that comes and goes, but it's the swelling that i wish to go away! please help!

What helps bleeding gums is--you mix hydrogen peroxide
with baking soda--mix to a paste and brush it along the
gum line. It kills bacteria. Do this on a regular basis till it's better. Just be careful not to swallow it. Spit it out when you're done and rinse with water.
