The offensive breath usually comes from posterior portion of the tongue as compared to the anterior part. Since the anterior portion of the tongue touches against the hard palate firmly, the resultant friction produces a cleansing action. This prevents the odor producing bacteria to accumulate on anterior portion. On the other hand, the tongue’s posterior portion do not rubs up against the palate as firmly as the anterior part of the tongue does and hence fails to cause any friction for significant cleansing. Owing to this reason, bacteria mostly amass in the posterior part of the tongue causing bad breath.
