Eye Stye

Eye Stye

Eye stye is a type of disorder that occurs at the border of an eyelid in the form of furuncle and is characterized by severe itchiness and irritation accompanied by swelling that eventually results into intense pain in the affected area. The disease appears in an individual because of an infection caused by round-shaped Gram-positive parasitic bacteria called staphylococcal bacteria in hair follicles that are tiny tube-like cavities consisting of hair roots and are linked with small muscles and sebaceous glands. The disease spread usually diffuse from one hair follicle to the other when an individual suffering from eye stye scratches the affected area.

Although the redness due to eye stye may hamper the sight to a certain extent but it certainly does not damage the eyesight. After infection, this disorder takes just a couple of days to become evident. The eye stye first appears in the form of small zit containing pus that gradually ripens and breaks out eventually. This is how the disease exists till its due course of time before healing itself thus providing comfort to the patient. The people who have weaker immune system are more likely to get affected by eye stye. Sometimes, this disorder is also confused with chalazion that is characterized with formation of vesicles on the eyelid. But chalazion is not a bacterial infection and is causes as a result of sudden obstruction in of one of the long sebaceous glands meant for lubrication of the eyelids.

Symptoms and Causes of Eye Stye

Apart from conspicuous appearance of furuncle on the eyelid, the patient not only experiences redness and pain in the affected area but his/her eyesight also blurs to a certain extent. Sometimes, an individual may also feel difficulty in opening and closing the eyes. One of the common reasons for occurrence of eye stye is frequent rubbing of eyes with dirty hands that not only transmits the bacteria rapidly but even chafes the soft sebaceous glands of the eye area. Similarly, too old eye care products contaminate quickly and become breeding grounds for bacteria and when you apply any these products in your eyes, you become more prone to bacterial infection. Another cause of eye stye could be blockage of the pores of sebaceous glands due to which they tumesce.

Stye Eye Treatment

Although stye in eye heals itself in a particular time, however, it is always better to go to the doctor for proper diagnosis whether your complication is mild or severe because sometimes the disorder may also lead to secondary infection. As a primary treatment method, the doctor may prescribe some effective antibiotic eye drop to eliminate the infection. There are also some antibiotic creams that can be applied topically on the affected areas for better result. In some cases, the eye stye tends to reappear after a couple of months and to check this reiteration, the doctor will give some specific ointment to be applied topically for a certain period of time. If the disorder does not respond to this method then the doctor may ask the patient to drain out the pus through surgical method.

In addition, there are some homemade remedies that can rid you completely from the complication if it has not taken a severe form. Following are some of the tips that can help in curing eye stye at home:

Place cloth pad dampened in lukewarm water on the affected area for 10-15 minutes and at least five times a day for effective result.

Take a clove powder and mix it with water and apply the mixture on the affected area.

You can also apply cataplasm on the furuncles for which you can use potatoes chopped in small pieces. This procedure not only treats the swelled areas but also improves circulation.

Cut the leaves of an aloe longitudinally and place the squashy part on the affected area.

Prevention

Don’t rub or scratch the affected area as it may help diffusion of infection.

If you are suffering from any other type of infection apart from eye stye then always rinse your hands properly after touching such infected parts.

Allow the furuncle to break out itself.

Unhygienic conditions favor rapid transmission of bacteria so avoid using eye care products of your friends or of any family member.
