Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes

Puffiness or swelling in your eyes is not an uncommon feature. You may usually find puffy eyes while you get up in the morning. But this puffiness does not last long and vanishes after a couple of minutes. However, sometimes the puffy eyes persist due to various reasons and you may have to contact the eye specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Your eyes are surrounded by thin skin consisting plenty of blood vessels due to which the sensitivity in the area is more as compared to other parts of the face. You never look fresh with puffy eyes and would always try to get rid of it by adopting any method.

Symptoms

The basic symptom of puffy eyes is sudden swelling appeared around the eyes making them difficult even to blink. An individual also experience itching sensation accompanied by inflammation in eyes. The surrounding area of the eyes become slightly darker and the skin beneath the eyes starts drooping.

Causes

Hormonal imbalance could be one of the major reasons for sudden appearance of puffy eyes. And this happens during adolescence, pregnancy or if an individual is suffering from some disease like diabetes. You are also prone to puffy eyes if the problem has occurred in the past in your family. Another reason could be dropsy, which is swelling from excessive accumulation of watery fluid in cells, tissues, or serous cavities, that usually occurs either in pregnant women or if someone is seriously ill.

Less consumption of water dehydrates your body and may lead of puffiness in your eyes. Long term medication including doses of antibiotics could lead swelling of your eyes. Similarly, if you are allergic to certain things and come across them frequently, you are likely to be affected by puffy eyes. Your diet too plays vital role in keeping your body healthy, hence eating junk and spicy foods and drinking beverages like alcohol may even affect your eyes causing puffiness. Other causes could be inadequate sleep, dermatitis in eyelids, aging and fluctuating blood pressure.

Treatment

Although the severe cases of puffy eyes should be treated by the ophthalmologist but if the problem looks milder, you can try some methods at your home but only after taking advice from your doctor. The simple method is to keep your body hydrated by consuming at least 6-8 glasses of water everyday. Also rinse off your face with chilled water a couple of times. Since your eyes need adequate rest, hence sleep at least 6-8 hours in the night. You can also apply some good eye creams containing like Aloe Vera before going to bed. This is one of the useful way to reduce puffy eyes.

Prevention

Cure for Puffy Eyes - Salt is not good for your health but you can take it to increase the taste of your food materials. Usually, salt is contained in the body in the form of liquid suspension. In puffy eyes, the liquid suspension can accumulate in the skin surround the eyes. To avoid any such situation, you are also advised sleep in a bit inclined position keeping your head elevated.

Always remove eye make-up before going to bed. And even if you use an eye care product in the day time, ensure that it is not very old because bacteria could develop in it and may multiply when applied on eyes thus causing puffiness.

You can use a cloth pad or dressing kept in refrigerator to put on the swelling. Alternatively, you can dampen the compress in cold milk before putting it on the puffy parts. This is one of the effective home remedies for puffy eyes.

Always protect your eyes from direct sunlight by wearing good quality of sunglasses. Also use suitable sunscreen cream or lotion to protect your skin from sunburn because this may also lead to puffiness of your eyes.
